Legendary Singer and Grammy winner Roberta Flack Passes Away at 88

Flack’s career spanned decades, earning her multiple Grammy Awards and cementing her place as one of the most influential voices in R&B, soul, and jazz. Her unique ability to blend emotion and storytelling through music made her a standout artist from the 1970s onward.

Her song “Killing Me Softly with His Song” became one of the most celebrated ballads in music history, later revived by the Fugees in the 1990s. Another one of her signature hits, “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” catapulted her to stardom after Clint Eastwood featured it in his 1971 film Play Misty for Me.

Born in Black Mountain, North Carolina, Flack was a classically trained pianist before stepping into the spotlight as a singer-songwriter. She broke barriers in a male-dominated industry, proving that soft, poetic delivery could be just as powerful as booming vocals.

Beyond her chart-topping hits, Flack’s music often carried themes of love, social justice, and deep human connection. She was also a dedicated philanthropist, advocating for music education and helping young artists find their voices.

Fans and fellow musicians have taken to social media to express their grief and admiration. Music legend Stevie Wonder called her a “once-in-a-lifetime artist”, while R&B singer Alicia Keys paid tribute by stating, “Roberta Flack’s music shaped the way we express love in song. Her voice was magic.”

Though Roberta Flack is no longer with us, her music will continue to touch generations to come. Her intimate, soul-stirring style remains unmatched, ensuring that her legacy will live on forever.

Rest in peace to a true legend. Roberta Flack, 1937 – 2025.
